PHEASANTS BY POST.
THE RECENT OPEN •MONTH. (By Telegraph.-Speclal Correspondent.) • Auckland, June 20. It is estimated that within the confines of the Hobson Acclimatisation Society over COOO cock pheasants wero shot during tho recent open month. Many bags reached 100 birds, and an average of 30 may be safely put to tho 150 odd licensed guns. Added to this must bo placed the spoil -which fell to at least 150 guns in the hands of landowners, which at the lowest average may be assessed at 10 each. Had the weather conditions been favourable throughout the kill would have been much larger. Each -steamer for Helensvillo carried large numbers of birds for the city, and the facilities offered by the Postal Department for tho transmission of pheasants wore widely availed of. By payment of a shilling per bird postal officials packed them in straw-lined hampers, which wero delivered at any directed address by the coastal craft trading to the southern centres. Cooked birds were shipped, and though the sport was great and keen the bulk of the spoil passed into the hands of those at some distance.
