Tho Hon. A. R. Guinness, Speaker of the House of Representatives, is expected to arrive in Wellington next Tuesday. The Hon. T. Mackenzie (Minister for Agriculture) who has been on-a brief visit to New Plymouth will return to Wellington to-day. Mr. H. J. Greenslade, M.P. for Waikato, arrived at Napier on Saturday night on a brief visit, and was driven round the country districts on Sunday by Mr. J. Vigor Brown, M.P. He left again yesterday niorning for Auckland. Messrs. Davey and Witty, M.P.'s, are at present on a.visit to Wellington. Chief Detectivo Broberg, who has been laid aside by an attack of influenza, resumed duty yesterday. Mr. Ernest Parkes, the well-known baritone vocalist, who has been laid aside for the past month with a rather serious illness has now recovered. He is to leave for his home in Wanganui to-day. Whilst thanking his supporters after the result of the Auckland East by-elec-tion had been announced, Mr. Hill (the uuofficial Opposition candidate) stated that he would contest a seat at the general election, and he was v authorised to say that he would receive the official support of .the Opposition. General regret will be felt at tho sudden (hath of Mr.. Frank Fairbairn, local manager of Messrs. Fairbairn, Wright, and Co., which occurred early last Friday morning. He had been confined to his bed for the last three weeks with ail attack of pneumonia, hut was improving rapidly, and pronounced to be out of danger. Ho expired suddenly early on Friday ' morning, however, death being duo to heart failure. The deceased gentleman was greatly respected by all who carao in contact with him, both in private and bnsincss life. The funeral will take place in Dunedin to-day. , Our Feilding correspondent states that Mr. J. Bourne, who has been engineer to the ICiwitea County Council for many years, has resigned that position. Probate duty in respcct of tho estate of tho late Mr. Samuel Hordern, of Sydney, was paid recently. Tho New South Wales portion of the estate was valued at «£2,94(j,870, and a cheque for iS29J,GB7— 10 per cent.—signed by Mr, J. Felix Booth and Mr. Samuel Hordern (respectively brother-in-law and son of the testator), who were . appointed executors, was passed through tho Stamp Duties Office in the usual way, and forwarded to the Treasury. The English portion of tho estate was valued at .£353,366, and probate duty upon that sum, at the rate of about 11 per cent., was paid in London soveral months ago. This is one of the largest sums, if not actually the largest, ever received. as probate duty in New South Wales. * Either Mr. H. C. Tewsley (president) or Mr. J. G. Harkness will represent tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce at the North slaiul Railway Defence League Conference to bo held' at Palmerston North on Friday. Mr. Charles Zachariah, for some years a member of the head office staff of the Public Trust Office, has been appointed district manager for the Public Trustee at New Plymouth and manager of the W-est Coast settlement Native Reserves „in Taraiiaki. Mr. Zachariah will probably take up his new duties on July 1.
