AN EMPIRE CENSUS.

London, June 15. In the House of Commons, the President of the Local Government Board, Mr. John"Burns, stated that he was communicating with the Dominions with a view to taking an Empire census in 1911. Sir Chas. Dilke (Liberal) advocated a system similar to that followed in Australia, where the quinquennial details were fuller and more complete.
ORDER OF ST. JOHN. London, June 15. The Earl of Dudley, Governor-General of the Commonwealth, and Baron Islington, Governor of New Zealand, have been promoted to be Knights Grace of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
WOOTTON RIDING AGAIN. London, Juno 15. P. Wootton,. the recently-suspended Australian jockey, reappeared at Ascot, and rode a.winner and three seconds. WOOLLEN STRIKE TEMPORARILY AVERTED. London, June 14. As a result of efforts made by Mr. G. R. Askvqth, K.C., of the Board of Trade, a tentative agreement has been reached with regard to the woollen trade dispute. IRISH NATIONALIST RETURNED. London, June 14. Mr. William Abraham, a Nationalist, has been elected for the Harbour Division of Dublin sea.t, in succession to Mr. Timothy Harrington (deceased). Jlr. Abraham was returned unopposed. FARMER AND BENEFACTOR, New York, June 14. Mr. David Rankin, a farmer living almost as a recluse at St. Louis, Missouri, who has already given .£30,000 to the Tarkio College, has given a further 46C0,000 to endow a trade school bearing his naffle. ■ A MELBOURNE WRANGLER. The Subsidiary Copyright Conference has reached a satisfactory conclusion regarding the Canadian Copyright. The sittings of the conference will now be devoted to questions affecting the unification of the copyright laws of the different countries of the Copyright Union. (The main subject of discussion is the Borne Copyright Convention, as revised at the Berlin Conference in November, 1908, and thr. attitude, of the Empire towards the subject.of copyright. Tha question has been raised whether it is advisable to promote an Imperial '• Copyright Act, applying to the whole Empire, or a British Domestic Act, with power to the self-governing colonies to bring themselves within its scope afterwards. Article 2G of the revised convention provides that the contracting countries shall have the right to accede to the convention at any time for theii colonies or possessions. In 1903 a departmental committee reported to the President of tin; Board of Trade that "It seems of the utmost importance that the colonies, as parts of the British Empire", should come: into line with Great Britain, and that so far as possible there should be one law throughout the Empire."] AN AUSTRALIAN RECEPTION. ARRIVAL OF THE WAINUI. Sydney, June 15. The Union Steam Ship Company's steamer Wainui, GB4 tone gross, which was yesterday reported to be a week out from Hobart to Strahan, has reached her 'destination safely, after sheltering from KILBURN A TOTAL WRECK. (Rec. June 15, 11.20 p.m.) Sydney, June 15. The steamer Tofua landed fourteen members of the shipwrecked crew of the steamer Kilburn. The steamer is a total wreck. [The steamer Kilburn (3271 tons) was wrecked at Ethel Reefs, in the Yn<s,, vil Archipelago, north-west of Fiji. Tho steiuner Antra brought the captain and part of the crew to Suva; the officers and engineer? were at that time standing by the ship.
