"SHIPPING AND COMMERCE."
AN ANNUAL REVIEW. The proprietors of the "New Zealand Shipping Gazette" are to be heartily congratulated oh the first issue of their annual "Shipping and Commerce." Its claim to recognition as a publication of solid value is the admirably displayed and most carefully arranged statistics dealing ivith. the exports of the Dominion. This feature of our commercial system has always been more or less unsatisfactory, owing to the various methods employed by those gathering statistics. _ in the review under notice the compilers have taken their figures from actual manifests of each departing vessel, and while showing clearly the originating port of overy bale anil carcass, the port of destination is also given. For instance, not only was wool shipped from Wellington to London during the year ended March 31 last, lnit consignments were sent to Canada and Boston. And so it is with butter, meat, tallow, flax, etc. It lias been customary, too, in ■ the past to block several lines under one general heading. This has been rectified as far as possible, but it has been found impracticable to separate the values of the lines of exports so blocked. Apart from this exceedingly valuable information, the review is an encyclopedia of New Zealand, and must be regarded as a fine guide to those desiring sound information about the Dominion. Some thousands of copies are being sent throughout the world, especially to every British Consul or Agent. Such a publication has long been needed in New Zealand. Now it has come, it deserves the attention of, all interested in the commerce of the country.
