SHOW AT INVERCARGILL.

I (By Teleeraph.—Press Association.! ' Invercargill, Juno 14. The annual midwinter A. and V. Show was opened to-day by the Mayor. There ; is, an increase ot entries, and the show • is a credit to. the district: A feature is the exhibition of root crops., It is a remarkable tact that in such a. dry season such a grand collection should have been -. forthcoming. The excellence of the exhibits testified to the remarkable capabilities of Southland's soil. Potatoes were of exceptional merit, and the jiidgo said that they formed one of the finest collections he had ever been called on to adjudicate upon. They were certainly well- ahead of tlio Duncdin exhibit. The checso exhibits were disappointing in numbers, owing, it is thought, to the reluctance of the younger cheese-makers to enter the lists against older rivals. The quality, however, was eminently satisfactory. The Dnnedin champions failed to hold their own. Although they held.premier position in one class, they were beaten in two others by Wyndhain, and in a third class by Grove-Bush. In connection with the GO-guinea watch presented by Mr. John Savers, of Edondale, which was competed for tor the first time, Mr. W. C: Hisiop, a Wyndham jheesemaker, by securing one more point than Omimi in the various checso classes, gained first claim on the watch, which has to be won four times. Farm butter and cheese produced good entries. i.u ' jrain, wheat was a strong class, and sparrowbill and gartou oats were also excellent specimens of Southland's producing qualities. Barley was somewhat weak—perennial and Italian rjo wore said by the judge to be nf exceptional quality. There were big entries in hams .and bacon and bread and scones.
