TO PLIMMERTON.

THROUGH ROAD WANTED. A matter of considerable interest was ventilated at the Hutt County Council yesterday morning, when a deputation consistiug of Messrs. W. Morris and D. Robertson attended the council's meeting with reference to the constitution of the road to Plimmerton from Pahautanui. As was explained by the speakers, the agreement between the council and the now defunct Plimmerton Road Board set out that the road in question was to be of a uniform width of IS feet, but it was actually being constructed to a I width' of 10 feet, with 12 feet on the I hill—a width incompatible with public safetv. Mr. Morris further complained of tho delay which had been experienced with regard to the fulfilment of the work. The amount to be expended on the work, as per agreement, was ~£1200; if less was spent, the balance was to bo earmarked for expenditure within the Plimmerton Road area. That being so, contended Mr. Morris, there was no virtue in economy so far as the construction of the road was eoucemed. Councillor Galloway thought that Plimmerton should be very well satisfied with what was being done. It was better to do now what was being done thau wait three years for an 18ft. road. Mr. Morris retorted that the terms of the agreement, which stipulated for a mean width of 18ft., should be adhered to. ' The deputation having withdrawn, a nenera! discussion ensued. It was pointed out that, against the sum of .£I2OO to be expended in addition to the actual cost of making the roads, were claims for compensation and fencing. .There were not in hand sufficient means to . carrv an ISft. road all the way. Opinion was "divided on the subject of the council's liability with respect to the agreement, several speakers asserting .that tho question of money was apart from the liability aforesaid. It was finally agreed to.ascertain the estimated total liabilities of the work before any alteration was made, in the present contract, and to inform the deputation accordingly.
