INDIGNATION.

HON. J. A. MILLAR'S OPINION 07 NORTH AUCKLAND. (By Tnlesrash.— Special CorresDonc'enl.l ; Auckland, June 13. Much indignation was caused in the Bay of Islands district when the Teport reached there of the remarks of the Minister for Railways to the effect that the North Auckland trunk line would never pay J per cent., and that the fur- ; titer it went the worso it would become. Mr. Vernon Reed, M.P., on being in- i tervicwed, - said he was astonished at ; the strictures passed by the Minister for ! Railways upon the other members of the Ministry who had pledged themselves to a progressive railway policy for the North ■ Auckland peninsula. Mr. Millar was the i only Minister who had never seen the - inferior of the district, and especially the fertile lands of the West Coast, and apparently was the only Minister who - failed to realise the great- future of North Auckland. Mr. Reed added that apparently the Minister's opinion of the north was reflected in the Department s management of the northern railways, . , for the North Auckland peninsula, notwithstanding that- it possesses the best-paj-in" line of the Dominion, contained the slowest trains, with the most obsolete rolling stock, and highest charges in the Dominion.
