j SENSATION IN NEW CALEDONIA. A SOLID SENTENCE. fcy Telegraph—Press Association—Cnoyrlent' Noumea, Juno 14. Willeinot, formerly Governot of tho Civil Prison, has been convicted of keeping prisoners in gaol after their sentences had been served, and of the theft of gaol moneys. He has been sentenced to five years' imprisonment, fined 200 francs, and deprived of his right to ever again hold a public position. Seventy-three' charges were preferred against him. He converted money sent to the prisoners to his own use, and, when uuablo to pay it back, kept tho prisoners immured beyond the time of tho expiry of their sentences. It is stated that Willemot, who is one of tho best-known citizens of Noumea, lost heavily at gambling.
