Thomson, S.M., a young .man f named John Earnshaw was fined £2 and B costs for assaulting Mr. W. Dawick, of I the Rangitikei Street Buffet, or in the j. alternative, 11 < days' imprisonment. Ha was also sentenced to H days' hard lar hour without the option of a fine for 0 using obscene language. Sergeant Wil--1 lis, who conducted' the prosecution, said , the man, when arrested, had ,£ll on him t and a pack of marked cards was part of B his stock-in-trade. He had several pre- . vious convictions against him. Accused j admitted that he had been before the B Court previously, but was only sixteen (. years of age then. Thomas Smith, for (. the theft of books, was fined 205., or seven da 3's in gaol. A Gordon Highlander medal was prei sented to Corporal Kells at the parada 5 of the Palmerston Rifles last night. Corporal Kelts. was one of the team which j 'won the Gordon Highlander trophy at i the Trentham meeting in March last. At : the same parade, Sergeant Stock was pre- . sented with the non-commissioned officer'! t shield, he having secured the greatest j number of wins in local competitions in ; the last three years. ) Tenders for the new high school will • probably bo called early next month. As i tho result of a conference between tha ■ architect (Mr. Clere) and Messrs. Collingi wood and Vernon (chairman of the Board i of Governors) and the rector, the plans will be ready for the inspection and ap-' proval of the board at its next meeting. A suggestion to erect the building in ferroconcrete did not meet with the approval ' of the architect and the school will be built in brick.
