MAYA RISING SUBDUED. New York, June 12. The rising of the Maya Indians in Yucatan, Mexico, has been subdued after five days' fighting. [It was reported that the Mayas' raid resulted in the death of 500 civilians and soldiers. It is said that the Mayas aro much oppressed, and that th<s condition of Indian labourers is practically slavery.] AMERICA AND CANADA AND THE GRAIN TRAFFIC. New York, Juno 12. The "New York Produce Exchange" complains that the New York Central and sixteen other railways are charging high grain rates from Buffalo to New York, and that this is diverting business to Montreal. [Last month it was cabled that in conneotion with the keen competition between the United States, and Canadian transport routes for the East-bound grain traffic from the Canadian NOrth-West,. a reduction of the water rate to Montreal to i\ cents made the rate from Fort WiSliani (the Canadian grain-shippitig port on Lake Ontario) to Liverpool, via Montreal, 8.13 cents a bushel, compared with 8.52 cents by the Buffalo-New York route. The Canadian companies, it was added, had all their May space booked, and Montreal was expected to become tlie leading ocean port for outbound grain.] SENTENCED FOR' AN ATTEMPT TO KILL. Berlin, June 12. A court in Silesia sentenced Goldstein, an ex-detective of the Cairo police, to eight years' imprisonment for attempting to kill Harvey Pasha, commandant of the Cairo police. A FUNERAL LEADS TO FIVE MORE DEATHS. New York, June 12. At Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York State, a train dashed into a funeral coach at a le,vel crossing, and killed five persons. SURVEY-OF AUSTRALIA. Melbourne, June 13. The Institute of Mining Engineers has appointed a committee to formulate a scheme for the complete geodetic and geological survey of Australia. The State coal mine at Powlett River has been closed pending the erection of an improved, ventilation fan. MURDERER EXECUTED. ' Brisbane, June 13. Alexander Bradfehan-. lias been executed for the murder of a man named Suthwland. near Croydon, on September 21. Death was instantaneous.
