In the Reichstag, the Chancellor, Herr von 13ethiuann-Hollwog, announced that the German Minister to the Vatican had been instructed to _ protest against the Encyclical, and to express a hope that a means would be found of counteracting its injurious effects. The Chancellor said that the Government was determined to guard religious peace. Herr Herold, oh behalf of the Catholic Centre, and Herr Jazbweski, of the Polish party, declared that they would not pronounce an opinion on the utterances of the supreme head of the Roman Catholic Church. Herr Gyshding, Radical, hoped that the Government would bo strong enough to secure atonement for the vilification of the Christian Church. VATICAN EXPLANATION. CATHOLIC MODERNISTS WERE AIMED AT. (Re<;. June 10, 10.15 p.m.) Rome, June 10. The "Osservatore Romano" (the Vatican organ) explains that the Encyclical was aimed at'the Modernists, and dealt chiefly with Roman Catholics who in Cardinal Borroineo's time were rebelling against the teaching authority of the Holy See.
