Palmerston, June 6. .At the Police Court to-day, Charlee Hutton, for failure to comply, with an order to pay 15s. per week towards the maintenance of his wife, was scptfepced to one month's imprisonment in ; Napier Gaol. William Prentice,' David j Munro, and George Shaw were fined 20s. eacli for exposing sheep for sale "which "were infected with parasites. ( . The annual meeting of the Palmerston Licensing Committee was ■ held to-day. At the conclusion of the business at the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Manawatu Uugby Union last night, Mr. J. T. Pawson, a vice-president of tho union, presented Mr. E. D.' Hoben (president) with a pair of cut-flass pickle jars in a silver frame, aa a token of esteem from the committee on! the occasion of his marriage.

A) small committee has now been set up toarrange for lectures and other meajis of: making .the weekly parades of tha boya interesting. Tho lectures or addresses mil include such subjects as applied mechanics, defence, and travel, war history, the arts of peace, etc., down to cooking. Captain Peach, scout will give the first lecture, and will be followed at the weekly parades by Messrs. M. A. Eliott, E. D. Hoben, Dr. Martin, Adjutant Palmer, and Captain Jickell, The scoutmaster, Mr. Whalley, is getting a splendid corps of boys together.

There was a large attendance ol members and a number of visitors at the weekly ' meeting of the Baptist Mutual Improvement Society last night. A debate on the question, "Is a White Australia Desirable?" proved interesting, and was decided in the affirmative. Tha society has' challenged the newly-formed Literary and Debating Society to a de« bate, which will probably take place ifl a few weeks''time.
