Residents of tho township of Maxwelltown, sixteen miles from Wanganui, are very indignant at the fact that telephone connection with the township has been cut off on Sundays, after they had enjoyed this privilege for many years. The district contains 200 people, all of whom' are dependent on Wanganui for medical assistance, and as this is frequently wanted, it is felt that tho disconnection is likely to inflict .unnecessary hardshipMuch regret is felt in the Kauangaroa district, Wnngaehu Valley, at the death of Mr. David Nichol, who was kicked by la horso a few days ago. A discussion on holidays took place at tho Waitotara County' Council's monthly meeting, this discussion arising out o'f a complaint that some of the council's employees had been kept at work on the day. of King Edward's funeral, and also On King George's Birthday. In 1 regard to-the complaint the foreman stated that he was ill in. bed on the former occasion, but communicated with every employee whom he possibly 'could, and all -but .two in tlio backblocks. ceased work. Tho foreman'.-) explanation accepted as satisfactory, The chairman, speaking about holidays generally, said it was an eternal mix-up concerning them, and he was glad to seo . that ,'the -Minister of Internal Affairs was moving to liuve holidays systematise. A half-holiday was no good to a man in the backblocks, 'who could only stick his pick in the ground, sit down, and light his pipe. It would be better to give such men their holidays' all together at a time when they could make som'S use of them. The council resolved to give a full day's pay to those men who had not worked on the occasions referred 10, and to grant an extra holiday to those, who had.
