P NOTES ON THE RACINC. (By Telegraph.—gpecial Correspondent.) '- WJnganHi, May 26. ,•• The racing to-day was very exciting, and the finishes, excepting tho Steeples, were very close. Bookmakers and the a machine were alike well patronised, aud the weather \ia,s ideal. { The opening event was most disas- , trous to backers, who made Penates ' an odds-on favourite. St. Bill and Eni- \' 'blein were the only others .inquired for at all. As in the opening "event oh the first day there was again a long delay at the post, hut when the start was [ made it was a fair one.' St. Bill and Emblem were quickest into their stride. The favourite lay about fifth in the I run down iho back with 'Frisco and Maori King i» tlie rear. Passing tho football ground, Penates improved his } position, and at the turn lie slipped up on the rails, and momentarily headed St. Bill, who previously had shaken oft '. tho attentions of Emblem. The favouil, ite's victory was loudly proclaimed, hut j a change ' quickly resulted as St,i Bill catno away again, and the favonrilo , collapsed a chain 6|f the post; llallarat then appeaVod, and was cjispospcl "of by i St, Bill, and just when the rpoe was 1 almost ovey Mauri King enmo with a - great rattle, and snored by half a d rlengtli. The winner's performance was - a great ono, as at the t'our-fiirlong post 3 ho was stJQQnd to last,- After this ho s got a clear run on the rails, till tho -' straight, where ho was on the outside i of no fewer than seven horses, and hart rowly escaped collision with tho' henfc coop. Tho race for tho Grandstand Steeples was marred by a couple of falls at a " time .when the finish promised tq bo j interesting, J3u)Jworth led from end ■ to end, and won by fully a hundred 3 ye\rds, ..Sir Lethe was made favourite, but his backing' was unjustified, ahd ho , neither looked well, galloped well, nor • jumped well. As a matter »f fact, he a had eaton practically nothing since 3 tuosday's race-, and was quickly in trouble, He jumped cleverly, but gained nothing on the others, and, in fact, showed'no dash at all. Bullworth 1 jumped very cleverly, and so did Oryx, until he camo to the hencoop at the back of the course, Hero ho took off 2 too far, and came down very badly. , For a time it looked us if the jopkey, Lyford, was hurt, but ho quickly re--3 covered. The horse, however, was . fatally injured: Lingerer took off too . far at tho other hencoop, and came . down when in a prominont position. - .Tho remaining three horses were in a ; lino at the last fence, but tho aged a Kiatere had most paoo, and got second money. Bullworth was slightly lamo - after the race. 5 The hack race furnished the most ox- ] citing race ■ of tho meeting, and at the finish the placed horses wore locked 5 together. Tam Glen and Waimoko wero " ulnar of the fiold passing tho stand, 3 but then Beacon got in front and led ] down the back, At tho three-furlong i post Beacon cried enough, Wnimoko I and Tam Glen being left in front. Whon i in a lino for home, Jenkins brought 0 Strathmoira up, and in a punishing hn- - ish the three past the post in an . almost perfect line. It was a grand , finish, and one not soon to bo forgot--1 ten. ' . ~ ', The Hack Hurdles was also producj tivo of a fine finish. Tho win of Maharanui came as a groat surprise, con--5 sidoring his position on the first day, 0 when ho finished tailed o(V. His runi. ning was inquired into by the stewards, d but tho decision of the judge was allowed to rest, r Wooloomooloo was scarcely ridden to advantago, and should have won. Nicotino and Merry Lawn, two well-backed candidates, fell, 1 and so ditl Beelino, who was ridden by Lyford. This was tho latter jockey's second fall during tho afturnoon, as he 2 was on Oryx in Iho Steeplechase. Playmate was a fresh horse in iho May Hurdles, and with Aorangi he was „ made favourite. Tho little Slepniak f gelding has boon yory lamo lately, but J ' ho was kept jogging about before the " start, and seemed to,throw it olf. He ,' was first over the initial obstacle, and '" then was steadied till the jump oppor" sito tho stand, where he again rushed '■ into the lead. From this out ho was in the van, and won by a length from !r Xavicr, with Aotea on Iho latter's :, quarters and Aorangi fourth. Tho winil nor and Aotea showed great ability as rl jumpers, Xavier ran very gamely. !' Woodhey got up in tho last stride of the Empire Handicap, and defeated ~ Mendip and John. Waipaku made the ~ pace verv fast, aud had a big lead

3 from hor opponents in the run down tho back, but she stopped quickly, and Merrivonia and John took the lead. At the turn Clemora and Mendip joined 1 in, and the. latter was lucky enough lo got up on the rails. For a time lie looked like winning, but \Vondlu\y 2 came with a terrific rush and won on tho post. Tho FarcwoH Handicap was a run--3 away ail'air for Fiutnus, who started . actual favourite. Several ot tho other ; runner j wero cienly hatkeii. P. D. . Jones, on the l'avouiito, was, as usual on the alert at t|io barrier, and ho somewhat anticipated the gentleman [ who controlled the lever. With two furlongs gone, Faunus held a commanding lend, and though Goldon Loop made strenuous efforts he was unnblo to get closer than half a length to the leader. A number of the other horses ' finished in a line, and it was with dif- ' ficulty that the third horso could bo placed. 1 , .
