Mr. Horace C. Waterfield, who has been private secretary to his Excellency the Governor during the whole of, his term of office, and Mrs. Watorfield left for London by the Shaw-Savill steamer Rangatira yesterday. Their object in selecting a steamer of the class of the Rangatira was to secure rest . and quiet during the voyage. The Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister for Education, left yesterday on a visit to Auckland. Mr. J. W; Joynt, registrar of the New Zealand University, leaves for Auckland to-day to attend the capping ceremony at the Auckland University. Tho'Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Ncligan), who is making good progress towards recovery, from his attack of nervous breakdown, has gone for a change and rest to Rotorua, accompanied by Mrs. Noligan. Upon taking his seat for tho first .time on. the Wellington Land Board Mr:'"James '''Gdorgc'ttij 11 of Mangaweka, was hoartily welcomed by his fellowmembers yesterday. Mr. Jacob Harris, lately in business in Willis Street, and Mrs. Harris (nee Miss Van Staveren) leavo on a trip to England to-day. Pope, Secretary of Agriculture, will attend the winter show at Dunedin next week. < Mr. H. J. H. Blow, Under-Secretary of tho Public Works Department, is expected to return from Australia next Wednesday week. Mr. L. F. Ayson, Inspector of Fisheries, is at present at Temuka- with the object of stripping trout and taking the ova to the Hakataramea hatcheries. The death occurred at Ohan on Tuesday night of Mrs. Ngarbngo, mother of Mr. Kerimihana to Herni, at tho ago of about 80 years. Several Otaki Natives left this week to bo present at tho tangi. Messrs. Ernest and George Brown, of Waikanae, who left recently on a trip in the Ulimaroa for Sydney, returned on Wednesday by the Mooraki. Mr. George Beattie, the recently-ap-pointed Auckland manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, arrived at •Auckland from Sydney this week to take up his duties. Prior to his departure from Brisbane Mr. Beattie received a handsome presentation as a token of the high esteem in which he was regarded by tho staff of tho company and tho fire underwriters of Queensland's capital. The district manager for Rockhampton, in referring to Mr. Beattie's departure, at a farewell funotion, voiced tho general regret of tho office staff at the departure of one whose ever-kindly and generous-spirited attitude had won for him the highest esteem of all. There was, ho added, complete unanimity in their congratulations to their departing manager on tho implicit confidence evidenced by his selection to fill a position of such importance as that to which he was about to proceed, and on behalf of the Queensland staff he conveyed to Mr. Beattie best wishes for future health and prosperity. At a gathering of fellow-under-. writers, Mr. Beattie's departure was also tho occasion of warm expressions of esteem and good wishes for his future, and testimony to his worth as a citizen. Mr. Beattie's valuable assistance to the advancement of art and music in Brisbane was sounded at a gathering of Brisbane Club members to farewell and God-speed him. Mr. Beattie rolievqs Mr. G. N.
