9 The excavation of the Roman, city of Verulamium, about a mile from tlie centre of St. Albans, which it is hoped to begin iu a few months' time, will form the third important work of this character that has been undertaken by tho Society of Antiquaries. About sixty years ago, and again in If®), the theatre of Verulamium was partly uncovered, and some fine frescoes, pavements, and marbles were found. It is tho only liomnn theatre known to exist in Britain, and its dimensions arc almost exactly the same as those of the theatre at Pompeii, which it closely icsembles. The area that it 'covers consists of about lilO acres. Verulamium was one of the most important cities in England at -the time of the Roman occupation. Old Sarum, about a mile and threequarters from Salisbury, is also to be excavated.
