After a closely-contested game on No. I ground, Oriental defeated Butchers by II points to 8. Throughout the ganio there was very little to choose between tho teams. In tho first spell Oriental were playing against the sun, and at half-time they had a deficit oi 2 points to overtake. R. Anderson scored a try lor Butchers, and Hunt converted, while for Oriental Cording scored a try, which was not improved. When the second spell had progressed some minutes Kankin- crossed tho line for Oriental, 'and Hchultz converting made the scores read: Oriental, 8; Butchers, 5. Give-and-take play succeeded until within 10 minutes of the call of time, when Oriental were penalised in front of the posts, and Hunt, lor Butchers, kicked a neat goal, thus making the scores equal. i'rom the kick-out Oriental commenced to rush play into their opponents' twenty-five. They put up a plucky defence, but at the end of the first spell Tramways had scored 13 points to nil, and at the dose of play the score had mounted up to 31 points to nil. Hawkins, a wing three-quarter, was the principal scorer for Tramway with three tries. Marshall, Bowie, Bromley, Spiers mid J. Clark each scored a try. Perkinson converted four tries and A. The New Zeola'nd Native Rugby football team which is to tour Australia played a match against the Auckland representatives this , afternoon and were defeated by 14 points to six., The team comprises some lino players, but their 'condition and combination are not good yet. The game played to-day indicates, however, that they are a team possessing great possibilities. In the first spell tries were scored for Auckland by Francis, and M'Gregor. In the second spell llerring and Clark scored tries, one of which was converted by R. M'Gee. In tho second spell M. Winiata and Rawiri scored tries for the Native team. The party leave under tho management of Jlr. W. P. Parata for Sydney by the steamer Victoria on Monday. " Every member of the party is of Maori descent. WELLINGTON RUGBY UNION. ALLEGED FRACAS MENTIONED. .A meeting of the Jlanagement Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union was held last night. There were present: Messrs. S. Brown (chairman), P. Peters, J. Sweeney, W. Perry, .1. Burns, A. B. Wilson, W. llardham, J. F. O'Sullivan, and W. G. Talbot (secretary). Southern Football Chih were allowed half expenses incurred through Melrose default ing to their third-class team. Wellington' Football Club were granted permission to withdraw its third B team from tho competition. A letter was ( received from tho secretary of the New Zealand Referees' Association forwarding ,a copy of resolution passed at conference on March 25. The resolution read: "That this conference re-affirms the scale of charges as scheduled .by the New Zealand Rugby . Union, and adopted by the last conference, viz., that referees be allowed tho necessary train, coach, and steamer transit, and 15s. a day for all days necessarily absent from home, and that local associations be advised that no member should act. in any 'foreign' match unless the payment of expenses as scheduled be first approved by the home union." The secretary- of tho New Zealand Rugby Union wrote stating that permission to use Athletic Park on the morning of June 3 is granted on certain conditions. J. Scully was granted a transfer from St. John's junior team to Melroso senior team. Senior fixtures for June i were arranged as follow:—Athletic Park No. 1, Petone v. Victoria College; Athletic Park No. 2, Hutt v. Melrose; Hutt No. 1, Athletic v. Old Boys; Miramar, Oriental v. Wellington; Karori, Ponoke v. Southern. Tho Melrose player (Marshall) was before the union in connection with the alleged fracas that occurred at Hutt on Saturday last. He made a statement to tho 'union. Ryder (St. James) also attended. It was resolved to hold the mattor over till June 8, as it was understood that Court proceedings are pending, and to advise tho player that an inquiry is to bo held by the union, so that he may bring forward any witnesses ho desires to. SWINDALE SHIELD. Tho committee appointed by the Wellington Rugby Union to draw up conditions to govern the contest for the Swindale Championship Shield, recommended the following conditions:— 1. The shield shall bo known as tho Swindale Championship Shield. 2. Tho shield shall bo awarded to the club whose senior team shall win' the senior championship for tho year, which club shall bo entitled to hold 'tho same for the year. 3. The shield may be won outright by any club in the event of the senior team of such club winning the championship for three successive seasons, or five times at intervals. t. The shield shall be insured to tho full value thereof, in tho name of the society, by the club for tho time being having possession thereof, and such club shall be responsible to the society for tho loss or destruction of the same. 5. In the event of any dispute arising in connection with these rules, the same shall bo referred to the management committee of the society, whoso decision shall be final. Tho conditions wero adopted, with tho single alteration that the Rugby Union should insure the shield itself. It was resolved to forward a copy of tho conditions to Mr. Swindale.
