DAVIS CUP PRELIMINARY TIE. UNITED STATES WILL PROBABLY NOT CONTEST, IT. By TeleeraDh—Press Association—Ooryrieht (Rec. May, 25, 11.5 p.m.) 'London, May 25. Tho United States 'will probably be unable to send a Davis Cup team to compete in England in . July. [Tho above cablegram apparently refers to the contest for tho preliminary tie, the winner of which has the right to challenge the holder of the Davis Cup (Australia with New Zealand).' Lust year the preliminary tie was plaved in tho United States, the United States won, and accordingly sent a team to Australia, where tho holders (represented by Brookes and Wilding) beat tho challengers in all events, and retained tho trophy. This year the preliminary tie was to be played in England, and tho challenge round in Wellington. If tho United States cannot send a team to England, then no doubt on England devolves tho right of challenge.] MARS-BUCKLEY CUP. HOW A NET-TOUCHER BEAT BROOKES. (Rec. May 25, 11.30 p.m.) Sydney, May 25. The fifth contest for tho Mars-Buckley Cup commenced to-day. As a result of tho day's play, New South Wales won fire rubbers mid Victoria two. Heath beat Parker (7—5, 6—3), but • Parker, after a brilliant and, exciting match, beat Brookes (G —1, 3—6, 7—5). The game stood: I'arker 10, Brookes 30, when Parker picked up a cunningly short played return from Brookes and lifted it on to tho top of tho net, from which it fell into tho Victorian's court, hopelessly out of Brookes's reach.
