At a demonstration at Warrnainbool of tho tabour party, which was victorious at the _ Federal election on April 13, a new toast—"The Glorious Thirteenth"— was honoured. Dr. W. R. N. Maloney, who since .1901 has represented Melbourne in the Federal House of Representatives as a Labour member, speaking at' Wodonga, said it was stated in some quarters'; that tho .. Labour party , would be blocked by the High Court, but the Government would not allow anybody to stand in the way of the people's will. The day of obstruction by the High Court or Legislative Councils had passed. These institutions wero not-in consonance with the- democratic declarations of the people, and, if necessary, the same people would be appealed to to wipe out restrictions contained in the Constitution. fTho High Court . gave a decision against the constitutionality of the new protection, which is one of Labour's planks.l . . Fisher, the Federal Prime Minister, in a speech at Narrnndora, said the Labour party hail never doubted 'the ability of the British Fleet to protect Australia, but no ■ nation had ever become great who had deputed its defence to other people. Australians must undertake the task themselves.
