WELLINGTON BOYS' INSTITUTE

A free night school was opened at the Boys' Institute on Monday, and three nighti: a week aro to be set aside as school nights. The primary aim of the school is to coach boys who have had to leave school to go to wort, to enable them to secure a fifth or sixth standard certificate. In addition to the regular studies comprising fifth and sixth standard work, a class in sigmvriting is being arranged to benefit some of th« boys who are apprenticed to the painting * trade. It is announced that free coaching will bo provided- in any subject on application. This should bo a good opportunity for the boys of Wellington. The honorary instructors include Messrs. J. Martin, Watt, T. W. Crawford, and Nichols. The annual ''Parliamentary" election took place at the Jioys' Institute last evening. Three candidates came forward and delivered their policy speeches, after which a vote was taken by the audience present. H. Martin (Labour) was introduced by J. Howitt. J. Keane introduced the Liberal candidate, I!. Parkin; and Armstrong, the Prohibition candidate, was introduced by W. Pointon. The S-oto resulted in a win for Martin, with a substantial majority. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded W. Pointon, the retiring and the remainder of the evening was devoted to an im-' promptu speech contest, which attracted ■five candidates. Jlr. Patterson, the judge, placed .T. Howitt first, and J. Keane second. Next Tuesday the institute has a debate with St. Aloysius Boys' Club.
