PICTURES OF BUSHRANGERS. A PROTEST TO THE COUNCIL. (Prom Our Special Correspondent.) ' ! Palmcrston, May 21. Lieut. W. G. C. Smith, of the Manawatu Mounted Rifles, who intends, in company with Mr., Louis-Seifert, to pay a visit to the Old Country, was entertained at a smoke concert last night by his comrades iu arms. Thero was a large attendance of members of tho corps and a number of citizens,-who had. assembled to wish Lieut. Smith bon voyage. Captain Peach presided, and was supported by Col. Pringle, Adjutant Palmer, and Captain Jickell, the Mayor also being present. The chairman presented the guest of tho evening with a valuable' New Zealand-nianulactured rug, which he said characterised the warmth which members of the corps felt for their lieutenant. Ho spoke in very complimentary terms of Lieut,. Smith, both as an officer and a citizen, other officers and the Mayor also paying tributes. A number of vocal, items were contributed by those present, and a pleasant evening was passed. Several sums of money have been contributed in Feilding and Palmcrston towards the Powelka. defence fund. The fortnightly meeting of Court Manawatu, A.0.F.-, was held last night, when thero was a large attendance, and Bro. Wickcnden, C.R., occupied the chair. The ceremony of unveiling an enlarged, photograph of the late P.C.R. Bro. Snelson was performed by Bro. P. Anderson, P.C.R., who spoke in high terms of the work done for the Order by the late Bro. Snelson, who was the first C.R. of the Court. Bro. J. Aitcheson reported that while away on a holiday he had visited a number ot Courts and was well received. One new member was initiated and another proposed.' At the adjourned meeting of the Borough Council last night the Mayor and Councillor Haydon were appointed delegates to act in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce on a deputation to tho Miuister for Lands, in connection with the subject of Native reserves in the town. These have been held in largo areas on long leases, and have, it is felt, retarded the progress of the town. The deputation seeks for legislation to enable, these reserves to be cut up into building sections, acquirable on reasonable terms. The W.C.T.U. wrote to the council requesting that-it should stop the exhibition of pictures depicting the careers of notorious criminals, such as the Kelly Gang, as being likely to injuriously affect the young mind. The letter intimated that there was no objection to the pictures at present being shown in the town, as these were considered, highly educational. The matter was referred to the Opera House Committee. . A number of remits to the Municipal Conference were agreed to.
