Oliver Spitder, ex-Dock Superintendent of the Sugar Trust, whom President Taffc. pardoned and released from prison, testified in New York in the case against Charles R. Heike, Treasurer of . the Trust, charged with conspiracy to defraud the Customs. Spitder said that, signals were used to warn the weighers of the trust's imported raw sugar (on which duty waa payable) if Government inspectors approached. The correct weights were then taken for a time. The testimony did not involve Heike directly, but bore heavily against Gerbracht, Superintendent of the Williamburg refinery, who is also on trial.
