The Australian correspondent of "The „ Times" cites opinions expressed in Queensland and other quarters that tho German immigrant is always considered as being before the English, being more amenablo to discipline (which is largely due to his military training), and more sober, reliable and intelligent. Emphasis is laid on the need of an economic remedy—by making it profitable to r engage in healthy work on land outside ' the Motherland's overcrowded cities—and of au educational remedy, by giving every lad a sound physical and disciplinary - training. :. "The Times," in a leading article, de--1 clares that the Motherland has faults 1 fo redeem. The Empire cannot be popu- _ lated by waste products, and 'the only . suitablo emigrant is one whom the > Motherland cannot afford to lose. Gwyane's committee considered the trustees' decision to grant £1800 annu- | ally for training a hundred or one hun- '. dred and fifty British lads in the colo- ■ nies. L Tho committee suggests that only fifty ; or a hundred country lads be sent dur- , ing the first year, and that the age he . lowered to sixteen or seventeen.
