The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company's steamer Caroni, on her way from Newport News to England, on March 17, si"hted the American four-masted schooner Lewis P. Gownrd flying sipals of distress. Captain Owen Lewis, of tie Caroni, gave orders for his ship to be stopped, and the second officer proceeded to the schooner in a dinghy. On hoardinf? the vessel lie learned that her captain had been washed overboard thenight before during a storm, tnnt tney had 110 other navigator on board, and were at a loss to know where they were.
