UNIVERSITY SENATE.

REQUEST FOR A REPRESENTATIVE, BY SECONDARY TEACHERS. Tho desirableness of making provision for the appointment of a representative of the secondary teachers on tho Univer- • sity Senate was urged upon tho Hon. G. Fowlds (Minister for Education) by a deputation from tho Standing Committee of tho Secondary Schools' Association on Saturday. The Rev. C. H. Moreland (Christchurch) contended that the appointment of such a representative would secure co-operation between the secondary schools and the university in the matter of examinations. In his opinion it was necessary that tho secondary schools should have some direct channel by which these questions might be brought before tho Senate. This view had boon endorsed by the recent conference of secondary school delegates. * Mr. J. W. Tibbs (Auckland) declared that tho present scheme in tho university with, reference to science and chemistry was behind tho times. It 'was, he felt, necessary that the matriculation examination should bo made continuous or co-operative with tho freeplace examinations. The Minister said that he believed that it would bo in tho best interests of education and that the Senate would be strengthened if ono of its 'members were in close touch with the secondary schools. If any amendment were mado in Ibo University Act, ho would lend his aid in tho direction indicated. At present ho could not say whether tho matter was of sufficient urgency to warrant special legislation. Tliero would probably bo an opportunity before long of dealing with tho representations of the deputation.
