THREE CANDIDATES DEFINITELY OUT. OTHERS TO FOLLOW. (liy Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, May 22. So far, tho only tlirco candidates definitely out for City East by-elcctiou are Mr. Arthur Myers, and Mr. W. A. Thompson (Independent Liberals), and Mr. W. Richardson (Prohibitionist). On Thursday, a deputation waited on Mr. E. AA. Alison, and asked him to contest, the seat in the Opposition interests. Mr. Alison, however, stated that, acting on medical advice, he was regretfully compelled to (lodine. A meeting of the Reform party was held in the constituency on Thursday night, for the purpose of selecting the official Opposition candidate, but owing to certain information not being vcadv the meeting was adjourned till Monday night, after which the name of the selected candidate will be announced. It is probabib that tho Rev. Joseph Clark will carry tho Opposition banner. A meeting of the Labour party was also held on Thursday night, when it was resolved to run a candidate for the seat. At a meeting of the lato Mr. Baume's old election committee, it was decided to support Mr. Myers' candidature in the coming election. Mr. J. H. Gunson (chairman of tho Chamber of Commerce), and Mr. P. J. Nerheny, have botli decided not to stand. iMr J. Patterson may come out in tho Government interest, but is waiting to hear from the Liberal party's organiser. _ Mr. W. J. Napier, who is in Wellington, lias not announced his intentions yet. The Opposition organiser (Mr. ft. It. Martin) has been actively at work in the electorate since Tuesday last, but up to the present there has been no sign of the Liberal organiser (Mr. Ra.r tv-ry) oil the scene of the campaign.
