Mr. Mains, a resident of Mountain Road, Remuera, had an exciting experience last night; Hearing someone moving about in a room, overhead he ran upstairs and saw a iTian disappear from a bedroom on the balcony. Darting downstairs again Mr. Mains caught the intruder as he was sliding down a verandah post, and adroitly, throwing him, managed to keep him pinned to the ground till the police arrived. The' man struggled violently all the time, making a desperate effort-to reach a loaded revolver that was in his coat pocket. A search made when the police came revealed that tin man had a whole burglar's kit in his possession,, and that he had secured Mr. Mains'a gold watch and other jewellery, valued at over £20. BAND CONTEST. Creymouth, May 22. There was fine weather for the Westl Coast Band Contest, which concluded' on Saturday evening. There was a very large attendance, and the contest was in every way a success. In the test selection, the result was: Reefton, 1; Hokitika, 2; Brunner, 3; Grey Battalion, 4; Grey Citizens, 5; Denniston, 6. In the test maroh, the result was: Grey Battalion, 1; Denniston, 2; Hokitika, 3; Grey Citizens, 4; Brunner, 5; Reefton, 6. Mr. "Wade, of "Wanganui, who acted as judge, gave every satisfaction. FIRE AT CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, May 22. Early on Saturday morning an eighth roomed house in. Stanmore Road was destroyed by fire. It was insured fop. £300 in the United office, and the fmv niture for £100 in the same office.
