PALMERSTON NORTH'S FAREWELL. 107 TeiecraDfl.—Scecial CorredDondentj Palmerston North, May 22. The regard felt for his Excellency the Governor in Palmerston was well gauged yesterday when, at a rather inconvenient hour, and on the busiest day in the. week, such a largo crowd assembled in tho Square to bid him farewell. His Excellency was met at tho station by the Mayor and councillors, Mr. D. Buick, M.P., and Councillor Voss, chairman of the Kairanga County Council. The Mayor introduced all those present, and then the party immediately drove to the band rotunda, the mounted police providing an escort. Besides tho large concourse ot people, tho Palmerston Brass Band was also in waiting, and played appropriate music. A large number "of Palmerston's principal citizens were present. Tho Mayor (Mr. J.' A. Nash) said the residents of Palmerston held the Governor in the greatest esteem, and it was with tho fullest regret that they, had met that day to say farewell. Bio Mayor referred to the able manner in which his Excellency had carried out his official duties, and to the great work Lady Plunket had achieved, especially in the direction of improving the conditions of women and children ; he also referred to the birth of a son to Lord and Lady Plunket in Palmerston. In bidding the Governor farewell, on behalf or the citizens of Palmerston, the Mayor wished him and his family health and happiness. The town clerk (Mr. W. H. Collingivoodt then read an address,, beautifully bound in book form, in acknowledging which his Excellency said it was hardly necessary to tell them how highly ho appreciated their kind words of farewell. Ho would return Home with an object-lesson fresh in. his mind of the intense loyalty of tho people of tho Dominion as expressed in their great rriiof at the death of their Sovereign. He said that lie and those dear to him had spent many happy days m Palmerston, and he really felt almost a citizen of Palmerston North, and ho regretted that the great calamity which had befallen the Empire prevented liim accept, ing their hospitality.
