DEATH OF SOULT. HIS CAREER, AS A SIRE. •. (TJ3 TeieKrapn.-Prcss Association.! Auckland, May 16. Tho slalliin Soult was found in his box at Glenora Park on Saturday with a fractured pelvis. . He died shortly afterwards. Soult was by St. Simon from Beauharnais by See-Saw from Josephine by Uirdcatcher. Ho was purchased for a trifling price in England and brought to Now Zealand by Mr. J. O. Hayward, who also brought Gold Reef to the colony. Subsequently Mr. Walters secured Soult for bis stud at Glenora Park, and the imported horse proved a wonderful success as a sire, and quite recently his owner refused an offer of £6000 for' him. When tho first of his progeny commenced to race, it was at once apparent that Soult was going to be a very successful sire, and gradually he fought his way to the top of the winning sires' list, and, last season, created a new record for (he Dominion for the amount won by his slock in one season. He will be. again at the head of the list, this season, and alreadv it is stated the winnings of his stock (since August 1) total over 4111,000. Up till July last (says "Phaeton") his stock had won .£BO,OOO, so that before lons tho total should extend fa six figures. It is noteworthy that the fee at which he was engaged last season (75 guineas) is a record fee for a siro located in the Dominion. It'was not altogether the make and. shape of his stock which accounted for their wonderful brilliancy; it was rather some other power of brain and

nerve, which they inherited from their sire. Perhaps the most brilliant of his sons was Soultline, who astonished tho Australian trainers by his ability to run away from any hold over tho first few furlongs ot a race,,- The deeds of Soultline are of wo recent date to need recapitulation, and almost equally well will bo remembered the deeds of other Soults such as Wairiki, Solution, Maniapoto, Lady Avon, Royal Soult, Masl.ftr Soiilt, Elysinn, Lady Annie, Waipuna, Grenadier, and Lord Sonlt.
