THE RECENT MAIL CABLE.
AUCKLAND'S INTERPRETATION. (By TeleEraph—Press. Association.) Auckland, May 16. The press cablegram, published on Saturday, .stating tint the Vancouver mail service was to be renewed under existing conditions, seemed to have settled matters as far as the Auckland call was concerned. According, howevor, to private advice received by Mr. Gunson, chairman of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, this morning, the cablegram should not bo accepted to mean (what it apparently conveyed), viz., that'arrangements have been completed for the old fcrvice. From the latest information, he said, it was clear that the message only referred to Canada's' willingness to again renew her subsidy for tho service across the Pacific. Canada has no objection to tho call at Auckland, which will not. in any way, prejudice her interests, either from a trade and tourist point of view, or on the mail question. Rather, on the other hand, tho acquisiilcr, to bmh by the direct service will be exceedingly valuable. As supporting this view it is inU'resting, at the present stage, to recall the fact. that, some three years ago, Canada paid a subsidy of £10.000 per annum for a line of steamers from Vancouver lo New Zealand, which, however, did not continue running The question of the Auckland call is not by any means "° ff -" — ■
