Before tlie Tramways Commission Mr. Henderson, electrical engineer of the city tramways, said recent tests showed tho magnetic brakes were effective at a speed as high as 22 miles an hour, and perfectly effective when tho speed was as low as three miles. Below that cars wero controlled by the hand brake. He had not seen a better brake than that used in Dnnedin. There Was no possibility of it not acting. On the Dunedin grades they always used it for coasting, and 'never hod aiiy complication of brake with the motor by which the brake was rendered inoperative. Evidence was also given by a number of city corporation employees, including Mr. C. 1". Alexander (tramways manager) ajid Mr. E. E. Stark (city electrical engineer). AH the witnesses expressed the conviction that tho magnetic brake was thoroughly reliable, and quite 'suitable lor local conditions. One witness said it was impossible to have the magnetic brake ami the power on at the same time, which was ,a decided advantage in case of a m'otorman losing his head. It was stated that the percentage of failures reported by motormen was very small. - The commission has now finished taking evidence,- and the addresses will be heard to-morrow. BREACH OF PROMISE CASE. Dunedin, May 16. A breach of promise action, Agnes Miriam Cotteri]l, of Rao's Junction v. Albert _Edie, of Edievale, farmer, a claim for c£7so for breach of promise, was set down for hearing to-day. When the case was called on it was announced that a settlement had been arrived at. It is understood the plaintiff received ,£2OO. CHEQUES OF NO VALUE. „ „ , * Napier, May 16. Before Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., toady, Eric Oscar Fairey, alias. Douglas Leighton, alias Douglas Stirling, pleaded guilty to forging, the name of W. J. Tennaut to a cheque for .£lO, drawn on the Bank of Australasia', and uttered to Louis Edser. Ho was committed to Wellington for sentence. The same accused pleaded guilty to obtaining goods and money to the extent of <£3 Is. 9d. from Kirkcaldie and Mains- by. a valueless cheque on the Union Bank* of . Australia, Hobart.
