MASTERTON NOTES.

(Prom Our Special OorreapomJcnt.l ECHOES OF THE MAORI WARS, THE TOWN'S FINE NEW ASSET. .Messrs. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., A. W. Hogg, M.P., and A. H. Vile, members of rho Wellington" Education Board, waited upon the Masterton Trust Land Trustees on Friday evening, and explained that a building for wood-working classes had, by mistake, been erected upon tho site kindly offered by the trust for beautifying purposes. After the explanation, had been made, the trustees decided that the building be allowed to remain provided that it is painted and other conditions regarding fencing, etc.. are complied with. Mr. John Dincen, the energetic truant officer of the Education Board, is on an official visit to the Wairaiapa, and on Friday looked in at the Masterton school. One or two parents in the South Wairarapa aro being called upon to explain to tho magistrate the absence of their children from school.

The news that Mr. H. W. Northcroft has been awarded recognition of his eervices in the Maori War Uns been received with satisfaction by a number of veterans in this district. There are not a few in Masterton who can claim the distinction of having sowed their country in those troublous times. of these is Mi. Herbert T. Marsh, who, by the way, has sustained a stroke of paralysis, and is in a weak condition in consequonce., Mr. Marsh was in several engagements with the Maoris in the north, and was present when Colonel Biggs was ehot. The annual meeting of voters in the Masterton Trust Lands Trust district (which embraces what is known as the Small Farm Settlement) is to be held on Monday evening next. That tho endowment set apart by the pioneers of the settlement for the purposes of education and general utility is of great value to the district is proved by the fact that tho receipts from rentals lost year amounted to .£l2lO 16s. A large proportion of. this sum has beeu expended in subsidies to school committees, technical education, and scholarships. So far as education is concerned, Masterton is undoubtedly one of the \best endowed townships in the Dominion. Mr. C. E. Daniell, whoso health lias been indifferent of late, leaves on May 27 on a trip to Australia. The Trust Lands 'Trustees, of which lie has beon chairman for some years, last week placed npon record the satisfactory manner in which he had conducted the business, and the impartial manner in which lio had allowed discussion.

The new gasworks constructed by the Masterton Borough Council near tlio railway station (for which a loan of .417,000 was sanctioned, and .£12,000 has been expended) are now being utilised for the manufacture of gas. The saving to the borough through the works being adjacent to tho railway will be veTy considerable. The gasworks aro a splendid asset to the town. When a loan of .43000 was raised early in the eighties, and a cast-off holder from Wellington was secured, people thought tho* civic fathers had entered upon a hazardous proposition. At the present time the streets are probably tho best lighted of any town of a similar sizo in the Dominion, the price of gas is very little higher than in Wellington city, and it is hoped that a substantial sum of money will soon be- forthcoming to assist in * maintaining the general services of the town. Mr. .T. King, of tho mechanical staff of the "Wairarapa Age," was last week tho recipient of a presentation on the occasion of his approaching departure for Hamilton, where he has secured a lucrative position.

Vegetable gardens in this district hare suffered considerably during the past month or two by tho attention paid them by tho grub of a small green fly. Cabbago plants have been completely destroyed in many pardons. It is hoped that the cold weather will check tho depredations of the unwelcome visitor. The ladies' bracelot race in connection with tho Masterton Homing Club is to bo flown from Woodvillo on Thursday, May 26. It, is expected that there will l>o nearly 100 entries. An important motion, of which notice has been given, .will be moved by Mr. H. C. L. Eobinson at the annual meeting of Trust Lands Trust voters on Sfopday evening. Tho motion travorses the discretionary powers exercised by the trust in making educational grants to individual scholars; the policy of erecting buildings, which is held to bo speculative; and tho system of rating upon unimproved values. A firo occurred at the Waingawa end of South Road on Friday evening, by which a t;wo-etoried stable and hay-loft, the property of Mr. S. Coyle, were destroyed. How tho firo originated is a mystery. Tho buildings were insured, though for what amount has not transpired. At a meeting of tho newly-elected Board of Management of the Y.M.C.A., over which Mr. D. M'Gregor, j\inr., presided, it was reported with satisfaction that renewed interest had, of late, been manifested in tho affairs of the association. The physical culture clas.ses aro 'being well patronised, and an activo canvass for support of tho association has been undertaken by an enthusiastic band of ladies. A branch of the Alliance of Honour has also been formed.

Tho inconvenience occasioned by tho faking , of Wairarapa bankruptcy proceedings in Wellington was again demonstrated this week, when a meeting of creditors lapsed for the want of a quorum, the expense to Masterton creditors of going to tho Empire City being ton great. Much interest is being manifested in Hie wool-classing class at the Mnsterton Technical School. Quite a number of farmers and wool-brokors' classers aro availing themselves of tho opportunity of acquiring knowledge of this important branch in farming. An attempt is being made to convert the Ekctahima School into a district high school. Since the railway timetable has been altered, a number of pupils have found it inconvenient to attend the Masterton School, and it is thought that these and others would patronise secondary classes were they established at Eketahuna. DON'T GIVE UP. Dontt give up. Discouragement has lost many a life. Fight it out. Try every means. i'ailurc in ono case does not mean success is an impossibility. Everybody makes mistakes. Experience is the modern instructor. Profit by tho experienco of this man. It may save your life. The experienco of frienda and neighbours. The testimony of Wellington people. Will bring renewed encouragement. Here is a case in point. Mr. R. R. Cameron, Builder, "Kildair," Lyall Bay Eoad, Kilbirnie, Wellington, says:—"J!'or more than three years I have had backache, and could never got a cure for tho trouble. It was very hard on mo at my work, as all my movements were painful. Some time ago I got a box of Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, and theso pills have quite cured me. There is no mistake about tho way Doan's Backacho Kidney Pills euro buchacho." Eight years Into, Mr. Cnmeron says — "Bonn's Bachachc Kidney Pills cured me of backache eight years ago, and I have had no return of the ailment since. No ono need suffer with backache for Doan's Backacho Kidney Pills are a certain cure."
