LACROSSE.

(Bi "Cztma.")

Saturday's high wind did not deter lacrosse enthusiasts from proceeding to Duppa Street, and two very good games resulted. The. first, between Wellington and Cnpitol, proved a surprise to all who follow the game. Robinson played' udmirably at poiut, and at one stage- of tho game it looked as if Capitol would find it impossible to penetrate the opposing line of defence. Wellington scored fust, tint Capitol shortly afterwards .equalled the score. Prom that stage on there was little doubt as to tli- result, and the Reds proved victorious by four to one. The win should encourage the Wellington team to turn out in full strength for they have a really fine membership, and are, quite capable of winning from any team if they would do 60. Clouston and the other Capitol attack failed to support the good work of their captain and centre, who'both made splendid openings... These young players should come out boldly in front of their men. By playing behind the defence,' they place their oponent between them and the man with the hall, thus giving him the chance which he seeks of intercepting tho pass, i The Capitol defence played splendidly, but the Wellington men carried "too many guns" for them. The second match, Kelburne v. Columbia, resulted in a win for the Blues by three to nil. It was a snappy, clean, and open game with fair stick-work on both sides. The Kelburne attack was perhaps a trifle weaker on the wings, but Pledger at centre made excellent openings for his homes, and is a player who will catch the eye of the selectors later on. Shaw, who. is quite a young player, shows considerable. improvement and Kelburne are fortunate in so haurjily blending youth with experience. Webb at centre was inclined to hang on too long-a fault in others' which weuld be crisply formed selfishness—and in consequence,' a few good opportunities were lost. . Proud and Jordan are excellent defend! men, and Penlington kept the nets for the Blues admirably. On Columbia's side, Leydon at centis was prominont, ■■ whilst Fama irnd j i ar ™ y a,6 ° P la yed with considerable dash. Their 'efforts were, however, to a certain extent discounted by the opposing defence constituted in Webb, Proud, Jordan and Meyer. Casey at third man was sure, but against experienced men he will wisely decide to dispense with dodging, it being far safer to transfer the ball to his waiting homes. O'Leary was just a little less effective than on for-' nisr occasions, but MacGove'ru was seen to advantage again in goal. flic Basin Reserve will not be available for lacrosseurs to-day,.'but the authorities promise that it-shall be for next baturday. The games -will therefore take place again at Duppa Street. ln Australia, lacrosse will receive a great fillip this season from the All Mates Carnival, which is to be held in South Australia. Each State purposes sending a team to compete. Queensland lacrosse is in a particularly flourishing state, and although the Bananalauders ivere the last to take up-the game, they already have four grades, as well as'repicsen.alive clubs in Laidley and Toowoomba The New South Wales membership has been considerably strengthened. -. At a meeting of the Wellington Managing Committee, it was decided to play four rounds in the'local competition for ,!i e i up don!, tcd by Mr. W. J". Proud, the first round will commence on Saturday, May 7, arid will be as follows:—" May 7: Kelburne v. Columbia, at Duppa Street; Wellington v.. Capitol, at' Basin' Reserve. May 14: Wellington v. Columbia, at Duppa Street; Kelburne v. Capitol, at Basm Reserve. May 21: Columbia v. Capitol, at Basin Reserve: "Kelburne-- v. Wellington at Duppa Street. ■ • In reply to a request from the Auckland Association to reconsider the question of kicking tho ball, the iocal committee again decided in - favour of penalising such play. Further business in connection with tUc mooted project of inviting, an Australian team to :New Zealand was discussed, .but: so far the Auckland' body ;has not definitely stated whether it fav-ours.-tlie'. project- r "Th'e' two bodies must be unanimous in an undertaking involving such expense. ~To-day's Games—Capitol, will practice with Kelburne at ipi, and Columbia with Wellington at 2.45, at Duppa btreet. All taking part in the early match are requested to be early on the' ground.
