SCHOOL SITE DIFFICULTY.

HOW IT COULD BE OVERCOME. '•• AMUSING 'ADVICE. . The difficulty in couheciion with the acquisition of a sohool site for the Silverstream district was the subject jof an interesting interview between Mr. Wilford, M.P,, and the Hon. G. Fowlds (Minister for Education) . yesterday. ,-'...' M*.. k .Wilford..said that there, was ' a blqek'v'pf land" in - the "vicinity of the Heretaunga railway station'which was admirably .suited for ,the purpose of a, school. /The Wellington Education Board was agreeable to erect a school there, but a difficulty in .securing the site was the stumbling block. .. The, block was owned.partly by the Defence Department and, partly by the Crown Lands Department. As far as; the De-fenco-.Department was concerned, the board would have no difficulty, but the Crown- Lands Department wanted far too much—in fact, it thought the land ; was too: valuable for a, school site.. •'We have got to au impasse," added Mr. Wilford. - "We want you to help US." '. • ■■■: ''"'■'. ■''•'' Mr. FowMs: But I am afraid that I. can't do -very much; the matter is altogether beyond my control. Mr. Wilford: Will you get a report from the Education Board?. : MiFowlds. No. ■ , Mr. W^ or< l : Can't you say that representations .were made to .you on the point? '.- Mr. Fowlds: That would bo an invitation to the board to ask me for money. I never ask boards to do anything of the kind. (Laughter.) Mr. Wilford: But can't you do anything at-Cabinet?-. : Mr.. Fowlds: in. what way ? -■. , Mr. Wilford:' Well, could you riot raise the matter when the Minister for. Defence and the Minister for Lands were' present? (Laughter.) Would it not be possible to say:-Oh,' Mr. Minis-ter-for Defence is willing to help the board; como lioW, Mr. Minister for Lands, won't you lower your price, that is a good fellow. (Renewed laughter.) Ultimately Mr. Wilford asked: Could you put the matter before the Minister for Lands? ' "Yes, I will," answered Mr. Fowlds, and the matter dropped.
