The man Casey, who was arrested, on Ms own confession, on a charge of murdering the girl Johanna Kelly while she was sleeping in a room in the Central Hotel, Armidale, on December 13, 1303, was charged with the crime at the Supreme Court. Ho persisted in pleading gouty, against the advice of his counsel, and after the Judge had carefully explained the position to him. Eventually, after further consultation with his counsel, Casoy agreed to withdraw his plea. The Judge then postponed the trial to enable experts to examine accused as to his sanity. [In his confession, Casey' stated that, after visiting other hotels to try to get a drink and finding them closed, ne went to the hotel whore Miss Kelly was employed. Ho saw a woman enter a bedroom, and believed her to be identical with a woman who had robbed him in Queensland. Acting under this impression, when all was quiet he entered th« bedroom and cut tho woman'B throat. Casey added, that he confessed because tie crime,was troubling bin.
