• AGAINST SIR C, FURNESS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopyrieht (Rec. April 29, 10.35 p.m.) London, April 29. An election petition is being heard against the return of Sir Christopher Furness (Liberal M.P. for'-'the Hartlepools, arid author of the co-partnership scheme, the renewal of which was' recently negatived by his- employees). Witnesses allege that 700 miners at Hartlepool, and a number of othefs at other places, were supplied with meals on tickets furnished by Sir C. Furnes's's agent and sub-agent.

[Sir Christopher Furness, of "copartnership" fame, is one of the largest shipowners in the yorld, and one of the richest men in the House of Commons. Born at West Hartlepool in 1852, and educated privately, he married at the age of 24, and set about the founding of his immense He is now the moving spirit in five of the largest shipbuilding works in the north of England, and in_ three engineering concerns, in addition to which he is a colliery proprietor and, ironmaster. With these responsibilities, it it not difficult to understand that ho is one of the most.extensive employers of labour in tho country.
