Pataerston, April 29. Owing to repairs being a£ present effected to two bridges m the Manawatu Gorge, traiSo for the present has been completely blocked. The work will occupy about a week. Severcl Palmerston residents hasre reported that Bailey's comet is now plainly visiblo'from here with the naked oye. ■ '" The newly-formed Debating Society has appointed tho following officers: — Patron, Mr. J. A. Nash; president, Mr. M. Cohen; vice-presidents; Messrs. R. S. Abraham and A. .E. Clausen;' secretary. Mr. A. Proctor; treasurer, Mr. C. Brown:; auditor, Mr. N.- H. Cooke; organiser, Mr. 6. Wilson; committee, Messrs. A. V. Barnard, K. H. Billons, J. Robertson, and N. BL Cooke. Debating contests with the Woodvillo and Wanganui Societies will shortly bo held. A programme, covering three months, has been adopted, and it has been decided to open the season next Thursday with a mock banquet. On tho following Tuesday tho subject for debate will be: "That tho House of Lords was justified in rejecting the Budget." At the Police Court here on_ Monday a number of farmers -': will be charged with exposing sheep for sale which were infected with parasites. Manufacturers and agents in large numbers are making application for space at the National Dairy Show, and tho demand is groaetr than: ever experienced before. It already runs into over a thousand feet of frontage, the whole of which'is to be devoted to dairy machinery. Milking machires ;■ will he a conspicuous feature of the show, and besides those exhibited in the large machinery hall, five makes will he in actual use in one of the other _ halls. Practical exhibitions are to be given at frequent intervals. Mr. E. Alexander, Director of Lincoln College, has accepted the position of judge of farm roots at the show, while Mr. and Mrs. GodbeTj of Wellington, wifl award the prizes in the home industries division. The local Horticultural Society's chrysanthemum show on Wednesday and Thursday has proved a financial success, public patronage having been better than at any previous exhibition held by the society. The spring flower show will.be held on September 14, and for this event a comprehensive schedule is to be issued. A keen demand for poultry has sprung up here latterly, and at yesterday's sale of the Manawatu Auctioneering Co. fair birds made from ss. 6tL to 9s. per pair.
