He must bo to explain the u&e and position of' the principal parts of condensing- and non-condensing simple, compound, and triple-expansion engines, as ; used in harbour aid river steamerß; and their mountings; so used; including all valves, cocks, gauges, and connections, in general use; Ho. must , understand the use of the salinometer, know how low-pressure boilers can be worked with sea-water, and how far the use .of it is permissible, in high-pressure-boilers; must know the .cause and effect of incrustation : and greasy deposits on boileT-hcating surfaces, and how to prevent the same; must understand'the water gauge, steam • gauge v . slide , valve, link motion, and loose eccentric, the principle and construction of feed pumps and : tiie common pumps about an engine; must know what defects may appear in any part of the machinery,. and how sucli. defects are prevented aiid remedied. 1 Ho must be able to give a practical explanation of : what ought .to be. done in, tne event of. anything going wrongj and in ordinary • circumstances must' be able to do it. Ho must bo able'to, write legibly, and understand the first four rules (simple and compound) of arithmetic; . . '

Irvine yesterday joined the, Ngahere as mate, in place of Mr. J.- TJdall. : It is understood , that tho proposed Dominion Steamship Company of Ncw.Zealand will enter into the New ZealandAustralian servico (says an exchange). Captain Bindon", the representative of the promoters, is now en route to London, where he wiil complete arrangements'for acquiring necessary steamers. The fleet is. expected to consist of four large vessels, the first of which is already being built on the Clyde. She will be named Maranui, and is expected to arrive in New Zealand waters in September next. The timo of starting business, tho headquarters, and the final Now Zealand port of cull are not yet known. , ; Advices have been received, that the steamer South Australian, which' was recently ashore at Vfallis Island, haa arrived at Lovuka. Tho vessel.' which is badly, damaged, mil bo dismantled and converted 'into a. hulk. The syndicate interested in the South Australian has. secured another vessel to take- up the running from Sydney to the islands. This vessel, which is named Providence, arrived at Sydney on April 12 from Shanghai. , The Providence, which is a sister, ship to . the Promise, is a steel screw steamer of 1096 tons gross and 693 tons net. She was built in Norway in 1903, her dimensions being;— Length. 225 ft. Bin.; beam, 33ft. 6in.; and dopth. 10ft. She iB fitted with triple-expansion engines.
