WITHDRAWAL OF BRITISH TROOPS. ■■ . ' . 1 ; \ . . ; SQJOKGLY CRITICISED. 7 ByTdscratili—Press Association—Oopxrinht . (Rec. April 24, 5 pjn.) London, • April 23. , The withdrawal of British troops to the Somali coast is strongly. criticised, especially as Colonel Sir William Manning, who took' |>art' in thej Somalilacd campaign, admits the probability of severe internecine fends, and emphasises the .'fact that the : frieiidliy \ are ■ disorganised and : weakened , through , listlessly .relying oh British protection.^
A cablegram from Calcutta datetf February 8 stated:—"A disquieting impression is, growingm -consequence of the hasty policy of the withdrawal of the advanced posts in . Somaliland. Such action would bo disastrous to tl» friendly tribes who relied upon the promises of British protection. All tribesmen protected are suffering from the reprisals which the, Mullah ttrestened long ago. This is. a' serious blow >to British prestige in Somalfland, and possibly in Abyssinia."
