During the afternoon Dan Patch, the Australian champion, made an attempt to .lower the record for the mile on the track,"and so win the cluh's piirse of £250 offered to any horse establishing a record of 2min. 14sec. The champion found tha track rathe! heavy, and made;a mistake on • tho wet ground after passing the stand. From that out his claims were dubious, and he eventually finished more than ten seconds outside of the record time.
