VICTORIAN'GOLD PRODUCTION. Tho gold production of Victoria to tho end of .1909 was £285,100,589, a record which compares well with, that of any other country in the world The output of West Australia is £85,500,000, and of Queensland £70,225,000, so that these States have a long way to go. to reach the Victorian total. On the other hand, the South : Afr rican output of. gold shows no diminution. For tho year 1903 the value of tho Transvaal gold yield. was only. £12,625,000. ihis was the year after the Boor war, but even before hostilities occurred, the total annual output had never gone beyond £16,. 450,000. By 1906, however, the introduction of Chinese labour, the opening-up of fresh mines, and additions, to tho batteries, brought the total for that year 'up' to £24,618,704. Now that - the figures for 1909 are available, it appeajs that in the last four years the value of the gold won annually has increased by over £6,000,000, the iignres for the twelve months reaching the va&t sum of £30,925,788. The result is '.aat the grand agirregate for the field now stands at £260,564,624, so that this year will probably see Victoria deposed from the position of being the largest gold-produc-ing -State in tho British Empire. At'.'tho present time, there are 71 gold producers in tho Transvaal, and the total number of stamps at work daily' is 9700.' It is noteworthy that'whereas the pold-mining industry in Australia stimulated settlement immensely, no-such, effect : has, T)een produced in South Africa. The. existence of # two races thero partly ; accounts for this, but the antipathy of the Boer population to closer settlement, and physical and climatic conditions,, all tciid against the settlement of the couptry to the extent that would have taken place had mining developments' been on the same 6cale in Australia."
