The following items of news are takenfrom the new Australian cable service:— DUEL NAKEOWLY AVERTED. . . St. Petersburg, April 9. A duel botrvoen Count Witto and General Kuropatkin, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian military forccs in the Russo-Japanese war,'has narrowly been averted. The General was offended by an- assertion of Count Witte that modern Russian commanders lacked moral courage. ' Accepting the remark as a reflection on himself, General Kuropatkin challenged Count Witte. The challenge, however, was withdrawn on the explanation that the remark was made in general application.
JAPANESE CARTOONS. Yokohama, April 8. With reference to the relitions between the United States and Japan, the "Yorodizu" and. "Niroku," Japanese newspapers, publish cartoons. The former deSicts "Uncle Sara" leaning out of a winow and hiding a benevolent face behind a demon's mask. Under it ther6 is the motto; "However much the mask is changed, nobody need be alarmed." The other represents the United States adding fixe fco an already overcharged furnace, and has the motto, "Take care you don't get asphyxiated."
HIGH TREASON. London, April 9. ■ The High Commissioner, Sir George Reid, was entertained at dinner last night. He said that the man who thought the fortunes of the English race were in a hopeless ruin, ought to be hanged for high treason.
SPANISH ELECTIONS. Barcelona, April 8. The next elections in Spain piamisa to precipitate an uprising against the. Monarchy. The situation is serious', for it is known that the Eepnbliean militants aro preparing for battle. . If they fail at the elections it is an open secret that they will employ force. ,

A man named Systroem, who had accepted a fee from the Anatomical Institute for his own skeleton alter , his de-. mise, subsequently met with a refusal when wishing to repurchase his own property. He then appealed. against the decision of the Court, that the institute which had purchased, his skeleton had the right to it, and need not.relinquish it unless it chose to do so. 1
