LETTER BY THE POPE.,
■ Last December, Mgr." O'Connell, Archbishop of Boston, sent the Pope a considerable sum of money to bo devoted to tho needs of the new Biblical Institute. The gift was eagerly welcomed by tho Holy Father, who desires (states the "Tablet") to make the Biblical Institute founded by. him a 'great' centre for the diffusion of scientific knowledge- of the Bible. His Holiness has now addressed tho following letter to the Archbishop:— ,
"We rejoice to know that the Pontifical Biblical Institute, which, as we
learn, lias met with the warmest approval from its very-outset'as being! or the- utmost "service for sacred learning, bids'fair, now that it has been enriched by your generosity,, to accomplish still greater things for-t-he Church. You could not have given! any more practical proof of your de-j votion to us, or made any better use of? your money. For 'to think upon dom is perfect understanding, , and 'h©i who loyeth her loveth life.' You haw loved life by coming forward, to help a< work which, by aiming to throw light l on the Sacred Books, sheds glory on* the doctrine of Him 'who alone has the , .words of eternal life.' You Taction add* anothe rstriking proof of your devotion* to. us and of your well-known.generos-ity, and we gratefully welcome it, andi pray God earnestly to repay you witte a corresponding abundanco of heavenly, gifts. Meanwhile as a pledge of , these,' and also as a proof-of our special affection," receive the apostolic benediction, which,we most lovingly impart tor you, venerable brother, and to thtf clergy and people upon whom your pas* , toral office is so aomirably :employed. w - :
