The monthly meeting of the Palmerston branch.ot' the' Society for the .Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last evening at the office of tho pre-. sident, Mr. J. H. Hankins. Correspondence was read from a Wellington firm in' respect to a patent horseshoe pad for protecting horses' hoofs on hard ■ Mr. Seed, the, Wellingfi)n;Tnspec£6?j recommended. 'K The"; matter was referred to the local inspector, Mr. A'. Perriri. The president ported that he had made application to •the police • for assistance ■in preventingcases of cruelty,-and they lad. .con-' sented to take action in any cases that came under notice. The report, of the inspector showed that during the past two months thirty-four cases had been'; investigated. Ons of these had been_ taken to court, and a fine of: £5 imposed.; t ~-. . '. .. The population in the Palmerston Hospital and Charitable -Aid district is 33,711, and the capital value of the property in the same area is £11,041,670. , Shortly after'five o'clock last evening a horse in a dogcart, unattended, bolted, from - the Square, and the, animal was; not stopped until the vehicle had been almost reduced to. matchwood. Outram; secretary, Bro. C. H. Gardener; treasurer, Bro. -F.'W. Pettitt; auditor, Bro. ,C. Page; trustee, Bro. R. Eyre. The retiring president; Bro. M'Lean, was presented with a Past President's jewel. Bro. A. A. Pratt ■ donated two > trophies for the euchre tournament.- A number of recommendations submitted by the outgoing council were held ■ over for consideration.
The Provisional Committee of the nowly-formed Debating arid Literary Society have drawn, up. a syllabus which, together with the rules, will shortly be submitted to a meeting. of members. The Wanganui and Woodville Societies, have sent challenges for debating contests. It ia probable that the Wanganui contest will be arranged til an early date. The Wopdville Society has asked that .■ a Palmerston team should visit that town, as the train arrangements'between Palmerston and Woodville will permit of the teamreturning' after the contest, and it isquito on the cards that the .Palmerston Society will fall in with the proposal. At,the next meeting of the Chamber of Commorce Mr. R. Gardner will movo': "That in the opinion of this Chamber the time has come when an-, other effort should bo mado by the in-
