LACROSSE.
{By "Centee.")
Saturday's games again showed want of management by the controlling body, and probably the best evidence that it is inadvisable to play, two matches .on. the same ground is foond in. the fact that Columbia and Wellington on this occasion could each put only half a team into the field. On the Basin Reserve it would be practicable perhaps to play two matches in an afternoon by commencing the first at 2.15 and the other 'at 3.#). But at Duppa Street it should not be attempted unless the first team;, commences promptly at 2.15. ■ ColumbiK succeeded in beating Wellington, but on no account should it be accepted as demonstrated that they are a stronger team. Wellington have a roll of playing members that should easily win the premiership this season—but where were they on Saturday? Surely they are not (as someone suggested to the writer) merely lying, low until the selectors begin to make notes as to the probable representatives to visit Auckland. If such is the case it is not quite the spirit to 6how.- . Leydon, who played at centre for Columbia is improving wonderfully, and O'Leary on defence for the same team is worthy of particular mention. He should stiok more closely to his man and. keep goal side invariably unless to intercept a pass. : MacCarthy is a clever little attack player on the sanie side; who, with. Fama, can make things lively, but both these players' efforts, were nullified to a degree by the other homes crowding the goal. Aspiring attacks should remember that, if they take up position in front of goal when the- play becomes close, they arc playing into the enemy's hands, l'or Wellington Eeneff attacked well,- and received good help from Carver, but was not. supported sufficiently, by the rest. ■ Mr. M'Govern ably controlled Iho game. • ■ : •. . ■ . The Capitol Club again administered defeat , to ' its husky hustling offshoot— the Kelburne Club. , Three gonls to one was the tally, whioh shows that there Is some "denl" left in .the old club yet. Kelbnrne's only goal was from the cros.'e of Webb, who, though .playing excellently/ missed Pledger at third home very much. Shaw, one. of Kelbunie's new plavere, will no doubt ■ strengthen that team considerably when he learns to take passes whilst on the move. Seoly proved an able defender, and held Borrodale— a much more experienced player—in check throughout the game. MacNamnra and Neal on attack, as well as Jordan und Proud on defence, played well. Meyer wns riot 'ip 'o standard, and seems to be out.of place on defence. Tor Capitol, King and Moran, at cover poiiit and point, did excellent service, while Watson, who Had the misfortune to be hit on the fncf by a new player, shows vastly improved play. ;Rankin, at centre, was undeniably good, and ably carried out the duties of a centre. Hβ was prominent in- attack, and did not hesitate to defend when necessary, Clouston scored all three of Capitol's goals, and he is a player who should do well in such a capital team. Lacrosse in Sydney, according to "Point" in the "Referee." is prospering so well that the- association has decided to commence a "li" grade coiniwlition for the junior players. Practice among local clubs will continuo to-day, when Columbia will meet Kelburno and Capitol will play Wellington. The contests for the cup will definitely commence on the following Saturday. -
