; : CHILLEI> BEEF. : The High' Commissioner, in his last cable message, states that the chilled forequarters. of. Australian beef by the s.s. Marathon sold at 3Jd.. and hind-quarters at-about 3§d. This is evidently the second shipment of chilled beof by the Linley process, and ; it is obvious that the consienmeut has not-, proved . profitable Frozen beef from Australia, realised 33d. for forequarters, and'. 4Jd. for hind-quarters, or considerably more than was obtained for the chilled beef, which costs .about a penny per lb. more for handling, chillinc. and. transport than does. the. frozen beef. The first shipment by the same steamer reached London durincr the first week in November of last year, and Messrs. W. Weddel and Co.. in their, circular dated November 5, made the following reference to the subject :-"No little excitement was caused at Smithfleld this week by. the 'arrival of the first consignment of chilled beef from Australia. The shipnient consisted of 1131 Uinds and 200 fores., all of which were shipped from-the KedIjanlt Works, Brisbane, ner the Marathon., The vbyane lasted 62 days,' and when the hatches were opened the beef/ was found to bo in excellent chilled condition. It had been carried at a temnerature of 30Jde. .Fahr. throuehout. in air sterilised and purified by the Linley nrocess. In appearance and intrinsic duality much of it was in advance of many Plate shipments. Its safe arrival gives promise of creating a valuable market for Australian; and also for New Zealand beef of prime quality. The shipment met a fairly firm market, and sold promptly at from 4d: to Sd.. per lb. tor best binds, and 3d.1 to 35d. for foies—prices which compared favourably with those current for Argentine of established brands. , ' . It will lie interesting to. know why the second shipment has not turned out as well as the first. ; ,The amount of Custome revenue, collected yesterday was £1991 Is. 9d. . PKIOES OF METAL.
