THE PATENT SUP PBOPEETY. .. ■EXPENDITUEE OF .£30,000. : ' At a meeting of the Patent Slip Company held yesterday plans of the extenwhich it is proposed to estab--lish'.in. • connection with the patent slip at Evans Bay wore' considered, and it was. decided to proceed- with the same, lheso works are estimated to- cost' over Under a special Act of 1908 the company was empowered to reclaim land in Evans Bay, opposite the patent slip property, and the plans snow, that this reclamation will result in an additional four acres of land, on which will be erected new engineering and repairs workshops. ' , ... It is .also proposed to erect a substantial wharf to facilitate repairs to <vesso*. while they aro afloat—work which, up to the present, has had tc be done alongside one or other of the Harbour/Board's wharves. This wharf will be connected by tramway with the different workshops in order to assist the transit of heavy weights and the gear required in repairing operations. The new wharf will be constructed with due regard to the prevailing winds in the bay. " Berthing, accommodation will be provided for two large vessels—one on each side of the wharf—and for tugs arid smaller craft. The maiu workshop . will be a steel framework structure of two stories, 505 feet in length and' 60 feet in breadth. Tho blacksmithing, fitting, turning, boiler and shipwrights' shops will be located on the ground floor, and the upstairs apartment will be utilised for general stores, upholstery, and sails. A complete salvage equipment will also be stored on the premises. It is expected that as soon as these ,yards and workshops are thoroughly equipped the Union Company will vacate the present repair yards in Victoria Street.
The proposed works are now occupying •the attention of'the Harbour Board, and a conference between the board's engineer and Mr. W. A. Kennedy, local manager for tho t'nion Company, was held 1 yesterday afternoon. As soon as this formality is disposed of the reclaiming of the land will be proceeded, with. The new works will provide a good deal of A'ork for many lands during the approaching winter.
