Just as the daily service was about to commence at St. Matthew's Church today a lunatic rushed into the building. He raced excitedly down the aisle, and leaped upon the communion table. Then, seizing. the cross, ho began to-cover;it with a scarf, and, when'the verger, ordered him down, he declared that he waß' St. Patrick como to life again, and also \ St. James. After a time 'he was persuaded to' leave the ohancel, and . was subsequently handed over to the police.. Jt was subsequently discovered. that he had recently, been released from' the Christchurch Mental Hospital. He was . examined by two medical men, and afterwards committed-: by the resident', magistrate to the'. local ; Mental:. Hospital.- He was a respectably dressed young man about twenty-four years of • • age.. * ■ • " ■' ' : Remarkable to relate this is.the third instance of ai lunatic invading St. Mat- . v thew's Church.
