Tho Miners' Wages Board's award for the Stockton borehole mine fixes tho price for cleaning and filling coal behind tho screen at lOd. per ton, and makes the working time underground eight hours (exclusive of .half an hour for crib). The award has caused gTeat disappointment ■ amongst the miners. They claimed a rate of 2s. 7d. a ton and eight hours from bank to bank. Tho opinion is expressed amongst miners that the borehole men will not work under tho award, and that will mean trouble at other pits. Members of< the Miners' Federation said: "We thought wc might get something which would maka tho men view the Wages Board in a favourable light, but this settles it." FREE LABOURERS. .TIMBER STACKERS' STRIKE. Melbourne, April 13. The timber stackers' strike continues. A considerable number of free labourers have been put on. They are working under police protection. •
STEWARDS' WAGES. THE SYSTEM OF POOLING TIPS. Melbourne, April 13. Giving evidence before the Arbitration Court on tho question of marine. stewards' wages, a providore of the Union Steam Ship Company said second stewards of the company who looked after the saloon bar got from JM to JJS a month as the result of a system of pooling tips. On the steamer Omrah, where ten shared, the weekly division of tips ranged from os. to 235. Gd. per man. MARSEILLES STRIKE. EXTENDS TO THE TRAMWAY MEN. Paris, April 12. The employees of several factories at Marseilles have 6truck. The tramwaymen have also gone out. Train traffic was suspended all \ this morning, but a few trams ran in the afternoon under police protection. : The Strike Committee states that there are 18,000 men out, including the stokers of three'steam liners.'
