MAYORAL ELECTION.

MR. WILFORD'S CANDIDATURE. About 150 people attended a meeting which Mr. T. M. Wilibrd, If.P., addressed in the Victoria Hall, Adelaide Road, on Tuesday evening. Mr. T. Hales was in the chair. Tho caudidate criticised the arrangement of the city balance-sheet, which he said ought to be, so clear that every ratepayer could see at once what tho position was. The complexity, of the accounts was such that no basis was afforded for any claim for a readjustment of rating. Though he disliked personalities, he. knew' more about the details of the civic administration than did his opponent. He condemned the neglect of past councils to pay oil the old horse- tramway loan of .£20,000, for which there was not even a sinking fund.. When tho loans' fell due there would have to be an increase of rates if a fund was not constituted for the extinction of the loans. He believed that the tramway profits weTe really three times as large as they were reported tc be. There was far more necessity for wood-blocking, tramway extension, drainago extension, and other necessaries than there was for tree-planting. People did not want charity like the tree-planting work of last year. , The candidate received a good hearing for his speech, and a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence was accorded him at its conclusion.
